Demystifying Color Spaces & Contrast

What is OKLAB?

OKLAB is a modern color space designed to be perceptually uniform. Unlike HSL or RGB—where changes in hue can wildly alter the perceived brightness—transitions in OKLAB maintain smooth, uniform luminance, making it ideal for creating consistent, accessible design tokens.

WCAG Contrast Rules

The WCAG 2.1 compliance specifications recommend a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal body text under the AA standard, and 7:1 for AAA compliance. Large headers (18pt+ or bold 14pt+) require at least 3:1 (AA) or 4.5:1 (AAA).

Color Harmonies

Color harmonies are mathematical relationships across the color wheel. Complementary picks colors opposite to each other (180° distance) for high energy. Analogous selects colors close in angle (30° difference) to yield calm, pleasing, and synchronous designs.

The Guide to WCAG Accessibility Compliance & Color Harmonies

Why WCAG Color Contrast is Crucial

Web accessibility guidelines ensure that everyone, including users with visual impairments or color blindness, can consume your website's content. WCAG 2.1 requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal body text, and 3:1 for large, bold headers. Our analyzer calculates contrast benchmarks dynamically to ensure your user interfaces meet international legal and readability standards (AA or AAA ratings).

Generating Harmonies & Extracting Images

Need inspiration? Drag an image into the analyzer to isolate its core color vectors using local quantization. Our suite also calculates standard mathematical color harmonies—Analogous, Monochromatic, Triadic, and Split-Complementary—to give your UI designs an organic, highly cohesive aesthetic.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between WCAG AA and AAA?

AA level is the baseline target for most commercial websites, requiring 4.5:1 contrast for regular text. AAA level is the gold standard for accessibility, demanding a stricter 7:1 contrast ratio to accommodate users with moderate low-vision conditions.

Can I input color hex values manually?

Yes, our interactive hex input field allows you to type or paste color coordinates manually and customize individual colors on our virtual canvas.

Are my uploaded images secure?

Your images are processed 100% locally inside your browser via the HTML5 Canvas API. No images are uploaded to any server.
